KIPS MDCAT Books 2026: Which Volumes Are Worth Your Time

KIPS is the best known entrance-test academy in Pakistan, and its book series is the material most MDCAT candidates in Punjab encounter first. Ask in any college common room which books to use and the KIPS name comes up within a minute. What almost nobody explains is what the series is actually for, which volumes are worth your time, and how using it badly can quietly cost you marks. That is what this guide covers.

You will not find download links here. The KIPS series is commercially published and copyrighted, and the scanned copies circulating online are typically printings from earlier admission cycles. Since the entrance-test syllabus has been revised more than once in recent years, studying from an outdated scan is a real and avoidable risk. Buy the current edition from a KIPS centre or an authorised seller, or use the free alternatives listed at the end.

What the KIPS series is

KIPS books are academy course material rather than textbooks. They are written to be used alongside teaching, and they follow a consistent pattern across subjects: a condensed set of notes for each chapter, worked examples, then a substantial bank of multiple-choice questions with an answer key. Some volumes add topic-wise tests and full-length practice papers at the back.

Compared with the other major academy series, KIPS material is generally a little more explanatory and a little less compressed. That makes it friendlier for self-study but also longer, and length is a real cost when you have a fixed number of weeks.

The series subject by subject

Biology

Biology is the highest-weighted section of the MDCAT, and it is where the KIPS material is at its most useful. The subject rewards precise recall of terminology and processes, and a well-organised set of condensed notes plus a large question bank is close to an ideal training tool for that. Work it chapter by chapter alongside the prescribed textbook rather than as a replacement for it.

Chemistry

The chemistry volumes are solid on organic reaction sequences and on the inorganic descriptive material that is easy to lose marks on. Physical chemistry is drilled more than it is taught, so if numerical work is a weakness you will need a fuller explanation from your textbook.

Physics

Physics is the section where timing decides outcomes, and the value of the KIPS physics material lies almost entirely in the volume of timed practice it enables. The formula summaries are useful for late revision. Derivations are largely absent.

English and logical reasoning

These sections carry less weight than the sciences but they are also the cheapest marks on the paper, because the material is finite. Grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary in context and the standard reasoning question types can all be covered in a fraction of the time biology demands. Do not neglect them, and do not over-invest in them either.

How to use the series without wasting time

  1. Study each topic first from the prescribed National Book Foundation or provincial textbook, which is the source the paper is built from.
  2. Use the KIPS chapter notes immediately afterwards to compress what you have read into examinable form.
  3. Attempt the chapter question bank under time pressure, roughly one minute per question, with no reference material open.
  4. Mark afterwards, never as you go, and split your errors into conceptual gaps and execution errors. The remedies are completely different.
  5. Re-attempt only your wrong questions after a week to ten days. Spaced re-testing is where score improvement actually comes from.
  6. In the final six weeks, stop working chapter by chapter and move to full-length mixed papers drawn from official past papers.

The most common mistake is collecting multiple academy series and finishing none of them. A candidate who completes one series thoroughly and then works official past papers will consistently outperform one who owns four sets and has worked the first three chapters of each.

Checking the edition against the current syllabus

Before you rely on any academy book, open the contents page next to the current official syllabus and mark anything that does not match. Look for chapters that are no longer examinable, topics that have been added, and shifts in weighting between sections. Our MDCAT Syllabus 2026 guide sets out the current requirements, and the official notification from the admitting body is always the final authority.

Free and legitimate alternatives

  • The prescribed National Book Foundation textbooks for first and second year in all three sciences, which remain the primary source for the national syllabus.
  • Officially released past papers and sample papers, which are free and more representative than any commercial question bank.
  • College and university library copies, which let you evaluate a series before spending money on it.
  • Open educational resources for conceptual explanation on topics where you are stuck.

For structured practice, use our MDCAT past papers collection, and read our guide to the best way to prepare for MDCAT 2026 for a full study schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Are KIPS books enough for MDCAT on their own?

No. They are course companions that assume teaching or textbook study alongside them. Use them for compression and drilling, not as your only source of concepts.

KIPS or STEP?

KIPS tends to explain more, STEP tends to compress more. Neither difference is decisive. Pick the one that matches how you learn and finish it.

Do I need the books if I am enrolled at a KIPS centre?

No. Enrolled students receive the current series as part of the course, and buying a duplicate set adds cost without adding coverage.

Are older editions still usable?

For stable topics they are largely fine, but you must check the contents against the current syllabus yourself. This is the main practical argument against using scanned copies of unknown vintage.

Where can I buy the current series?

From KIPS centres and established booksellers in most major cities. A current printing gives you the current syllabus mapping.
