Physics is the section that decides more MDCAT results than any other, not because it is the hardest subject in absolute terms but because it is the one where candidates run out of time. The STEP entry test series, produced by the entrance-test wing of Punjab Group of Colleges, is built around that problem: it is a speed and accuracy trainer rather than a teaching text. What the STEP physics book actually is

The book is organised as a set of chapter modules that mirror the intermediate physics course, each condensed into a formula-and-concept summary followed by a large multiple-choice question bank with an answer key. There is very little narrative explanation. The assumption is that you have already been taught the topic and now need to convert that knowledge into the ability to answer a question in under a minute.

That makes it a second-stage resource. Used as a first encounter with a topic it will confuse you; used as a drilling tool after you have studied the topic properly it is effective.

MDCAT physics is drawn from the PMDC national syllabus and concentrates on force and motion, work and energy, rotational and circular motion, waves and oscillations, thermodynamics, electrostatics, current electricity, electromagnetism, optics, and modern and nuclear physics. Strengths

  • The question volume is high, and volume is exactly what physics preparation needs. Recognition speed only comes from repetition.
  • Formula sheets at the start of each module are genuinely useful for last-month revision.
  • Numerical questions are pitched at entrance-test difficulty, which is generally lighter mathematically than board questions but much tighter on time.
  • Distractor options are designed the way real entrance-test options are designed, so you learn to spot the near-miss answer produced by a sign error or a unit slip.

Weaknesses

  • Conceptual depth is minimal. If you do not understand why an answer is right, the book will not tell you.
  • Derivations are largely absent, which matters for candidates who reason from first principles rather than from memorised results.
  • Answer keys contain occasional errors. Treat a contradiction with your textbook as a reason to check, not as a reason to memorise the book.
  • Diagram quality is inconsistent between printings, and optics and electromagnetism suffer most from this.

How to work through it properly

  1. Study the topic first from the prescribed National Book Foundation or provincial textbook. That is the material the paper is written from.
  2. Write out the formula set for the chapter from memory before you open the STEP summary, then check what you missed. Recall practice beats re-reading.
  3. Attempt the question bank in timed blocks of twenty to thirty questions rather than open-ended sessions. Physics accuracy collapses without a clock.
  4. Log every wrong answer in two categories: conceptual gaps and execution errors such as unit conversion, sign, or misread stem. Most candidates discover the second category is larger than they expected.
  5. Re-attempt only your wrong questions after seven to ten days. Spaced re-testing is where the actual improvement happens.
  6. From roughly the final six weeks, shift the balance towards full-length mixed papers so that you practise switching between topics, which is what the real test demands.

One habit is worth singling out. Do not check the answer after each question. Complete the block, then mark. Checking as you go inflates your apparent score and hides the timing problem that will actually hurt you on test day.
