Biology carries the heaviest weighting on the MDCAT, which means it is where the largest number of marks are won and lost. It is also the section that responds best to unit-wise past paper practice, because the syllabus divides cleanly into topics and because the questions test precise recall of terminology and processes rather than open-ended problem solving. Why unit-wise practice beats full papers early on
A full-length paper attempted at the start of preparation tells you something you already know, which is that you have not finished the syllabus. It produces a low score, a demoralising afternoon and very little actionable information, because your errors are scattered across topics you have not studied yet.
Unit-wise papers solve this. You study a unit, you test that unit immediately, and the result isolates a single variable. If you score poorly on cell structure, the problem is cell structure, not fatigue or pacing or the fact that you have not covered evolution yet. That isolation is what makes the feedback useful.
Full-length papers still matter, but they belong to the second half of preparation, once coverage is complete and the thing you need to train is stamina, pacing and switching between subjects.
How MDCAT biology is examined
The biology section is drawn from the PMDC national syllabus and spans the standard first and second year content: the biological molecules and enzymes, cell structure and function, bioenergetics, the diversity and classification of organisms, plant and animal physiology across the major systems, coordination and control, reproduction, development, inheritance and genetics, evolution, ecology, and biotechnology.
Questions lean heavily towards precise recall and towards recognising a described process from its distinguishing feature. A review cycle that works
- Study the unit from the prescribed National Book Foundation or provincial textbook until you can explain its main processes without looking.
- Attempt the unit-wise questions timed, roughly one minute each, with nothing open in front of you.
- Mark only at the end. Marking as you go inflates your apparent score and hides your pacing problem.
- Sort errors into three groups: content you never learned, content you learned but confused with something similar, and questions you misread.
- Treat the second group as the priority. In biology, most lost marks come from confusable pairs rather than from total ignorance.
- Re-attempt your wrong questions after seven to ten days without re-reading the unit first. If you still get them wrong, the underlying concept has not been learned.
The confusable pairs problem
Biology examiners build distractors out of things that sit next to each other in your notes. Mitosis and meiosis stages, xylem and phloem transport, the hormones of the anterior and posterior pituitary, systole and diastole events, C3 and C4 pathways, innate and adaptive immunity, and the enzymes of digestion by site are all classic sources.
The remedy is comparative rather than sequential study. When you finish a unit, build a two-column table for every pair you could confuse under time pressure and revise the table rather than the prose. This single habit tends to move biology scores more than any other change students make.
Using answer keys carefully
Many keys circulating online are produced by students or academies rather than by the examining body, and errors do occur. If a key contradicts your prescribed textbook, the textbook wins until proven otherwise. If a key gives an answer with no reasoning and you cannot reconstruct the reasoning, you have learned nothing from that question and should flag it for follow-up.

Fitting biology into the wider schedule
Because biology is the largest section, it should start first and run continuously rather than being blocked into a few intensive weeks. A workable pattern is daily biology throughout preparation, with chemistry and physics rotating alongside it, then a shift to mixed full-length practice in the final six weeks.

How many biology questions should I do per unit?
Enough that your accuracy on that unit stabilises above roughly ninety percent across two separate sittings a week apart. The number varies by unit and by student, and a fixed target is less useful than that stability test.
Should I memorise diagrams?
Understand them rather than memorise them, but be able to label the structures that carry function. Labelled structures are examined regularly.
When should I move to full-length papers?
Once your syllabus coverage is complete, or from roughly the halfway point of your preparation, whichever comes first.
Is unit-wise practice enough on its own?
No. It builds topic accuracy but not pacing or subject switching, both of which only full-length timed papers develop.
