Most MDCAT advice is a list of tips. Tips are easy to agree with and almost impossible to act on, which is why candidates read a dozen of them and change nothing. This guide is structured differently. It sets out a sequence, explains the reasoning behind each stage, and is honest about the small number of habits that actually move a score and the much larger number of things that merely feel productive.

The paper is 180 questions in 180 minutes. That single fact shapes everything below, because it means the test rewards fast accurate retrieval rather than deep deliberation, and those are trainable in different ways.

Start with the syllabus and a coverage sheet

Before you buy anything, download the official syllabus and write every topic on one sheet of paper with three columns: not started, covered, tested. Three states only. Anything more elaborate becomes a project in itself and gets abandoned by week three.

Allocate time by weighting, not by preference

Biology is 81 questions, chemistry 45, physics 36, and English and logical reasoning nine each. Candidates consistently over-invest in the subject they enjoy and under-invest in the one that carries the most marks. Biology should run continuously from the first week to the last rather than being blocked into an intensive month, because it is the largest body of material and the one most vulnerable to forgetting.

The eighteen questions in English and logical reasoning deserve a specific mention. They are the cheapest marks on the paper because the material is finite and unfamiliar to almost everyone, which means a few focused sessions produce improvement that would take weeks to achieve in physics. They are also the sections most often left until the final fortnight and then skipped.

Subject by subject

Biology

Biology questions favour precise recall and the identification of a process from a distinguishing feature. The largest single source of lost marks is not ignorance but confusion between things that sit next to each other in your notes: mitosis and meiosis stages, xylem and phloem transport, anterior and posterior pituitary hormones, innate and adaptive immunity, the enzymes of digestion by site.

Physics

Physics splits into two populations of question. The large majority follow the textbook closely and can be answered quickly if your formulas are secure. A smaller group are conceptual or applied, often involving a diagram or a short calculation, and they are not difficult so much as unfamiliar. Those are the questions that separate candidates at the top of the merit list, and the only way to make them familiar is to have met them before.

Practically this means two things. Drill the standard material until it is automatic, so that it costs you thirty seconds rather than a minute. Then spend deliberate time on applied and diagram-based questions rather than avoiding them because they are uncomfortable.

Chemistry

Chemistry rewards organisation more than volume. Organic chemistry should be learned as reaction maps rather than as prose, because that is how it is examined: which reagent, which conditions, which product. Physical chemistry needs numerical practice under time pressure. Inorganic and descriptive material is largely recall and responds well to condensed notes reviewed frequently.

English and logical reasoning

English tests usage rather than literature. Grammar, tense and agreement, prepositions and articles, vocabulary in context and short comprehension. Logical reasoning covers deduction, cause and effect, analogies and sequences. Neither section is taught in most pre-medical curricula, which is exactly why a small investment pays disproportionately.

The habits that actually change scores

  1. Test yourself instead of re-reading. Retrieval practice produces retention; re-reading produces the feeling of retention and very little else.
  2. Mark papers only after finishing them. Checking answers as you go inflates your apparent score and conceals the pacing problem that will cost you on the day.
  3. Keep an error log sorted by cause, not by topic: content you never learned, content you confused with something similar, and questions you misread. The three need completely different responses.
  4. Re-attempt wrong questions after seven to ten days without revising first. This spacing is where measurable improvement comes from.
  5. Work to a clock from the beginning. Untimed practice trains a skill the examination does not test.
  6. Protect sleep. In a long preparation, sleep debt costs more accuracy than any topic you could have added in the extra hours.

A workable schedule

  1. First phase: cover the full syllabus from the prescribed textbooks, one topic at a time, making your own condensed notes as you go.
  2. Alongside it: drill each completed topic in timed blocks of twenty to thirty questions and log your errors.
  3. From the halfway point: add one full-length timed paper per week under strict conditions.
  4. Final six weeks: stop topic work. Move to mixed full-length practice and targeted revision of your logged weaknesses.
  5. Final week: no new material at all. Your own notes, your error log and your formula sheets only.

What to use, and what to skip
